Heads Carolina, Tails California

California it is! Shortly after Jesse received his soft wings, he selected the F-18 Hornets platform. We will be spending the next year in sunny San Diego at MCAS Miramar, and then the next 3 years (yikes!) in JAPAN at MCAS Iwakuni.

Jesse and I prefer (yes we're crazy) to DITY move (Do IT Yourself). You get paid per pound, and the farther you have to travel, the more you get paid per pound. It turns out it was a great thing that we prefer to DITY, because the wait to have the military move us was 5 weeks, and we only had one week to get to California. It was a cool 1845 miles from Meridian, MS to San Diego, CA; a true testament to the strength of our relationship. ha.

My last day of work at Hope Village was on a Friday. With help from our friends, the Harrisons, we loaded up the largest moving truck Penske offers, cleaned the house, crashed for the night, and hit the road bright and early Saturday morning, July 7th 2012.

Thank you Travis and Meredith!
Helping people pack up their house=true friendship

Derby made a fort in the backseat, complete with her blankies and favorite things. Go America!

On the road! Jesse was a champ driving this thing. He says he learned 'trucker code'.

Derby is an excellent riding buddy. Weeee!!

If you have ever driven cross country, then you understand what an incredibly boring drive it can be at times. This is somewhere approximately in the middle of nowhere.

Somewhere else in the middle of nowhere.

So. Much. Sand.

So close!

We eventually made it to California before dark, on Sunday evening, July 8th 2012.  Because we only had a week to get to California, we did not have a house lined up yet. Fortunately, Brett and Sarena were kind enough to let us crash with them for a few days while we secured a house.
Jesse and Derby were right at home

Derby says she can get used to this.

More to come from sunny San Diego!
